Enter the world-famous Vatican Museums and papal palaces before the general public on our small group tour in groups of 12 participants or less. Enjoy a light, complimentary breakfast before your official guide takes you on a journey through the ages, navigating with ease through vast corridors endorned with ancient marble sculptures and Renaissance artworks. With our guides, you will gasp in awe at the masterpieces of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel before traversing through to the biggest and most famous of all Basilicas: St. Peter's where the tour will end. Ask your guide to direct you to the elevator if you wish to climb to the top of the dome (Cupula) for outstanding views of the Eternal City!
As your guide skilfully navigates you through the vast corridors of the Vatican Museums, you will relish the many artworks to which the museums play host, including the Laocoön sculpture which has been attributed as being the foundation of the museums when it was unearthed in a Roman vineyard in 1506 and moved to the Vatican by Pope Julius II. Moving through the Pinecone Courtyard, Raphael Rooms, Gallery of Candelabra, Gallery of Maps, you will marvel at such works such as the Belvedere Torso, Apollo Belvedere, Raphael's School of Athens and ending in the Basilica of St. Peter's, you will view one of Michelangel's earliest masterpieces, created only when he was 23: The Pietà. Ending at the alter, awe at the bronze canopy, much of which had been created by melting down the beams in the Pantheon to achieve.
Your day begins meeting at our offices, just a few steps away from the entrance to the Museums where we offer a light breakfast and freshly brewed coffee before your guide takes you up to the entrance. Here, you will get a detailed introduction to the Sistine Chapel before we enter so once you reach the Chapel, the guide will leave you some moments to reflect, gaze and wonder at the remarkable frescos, paintings and tapestries which adorn the walls and ceiling.
Please note that the Basilica of St. Peter is an active parish and is therefore subject to unforeseen closures for spiritual celebrations. In such rare cases, the full tour will be spent exploring the Museums and Sistine Chapel and the guide will give you a great explanation of the Basilica should you wish to return when it is open.
