We start early with Corcovado & Christ-the-Redeemer : Corcovado, meaning "hunchback" in Portuguese, is a 710-meter granite peak, located in the Tijuca Forest, a national park, in the middle of Rio de Janeiro. The Corcovado is visible from great distances and is known worldwide for the 38-meter statue of Jesus atop its peak, entitled Cristo Redentor or "Christ the Redeemer", which is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. The peak and statue will be accessed by the 3.8 kilometer Corcovado Rack Railway which was opened in 1884 and refurbished in 1980. The railway uses two-car electrically powered trains, with a passenger capacity of 360 passengers per hour. The rail trip takes approximately 20 min and departs every half hour. Due to its limited passenger capacity, the wait to board at the entry station can take some time.

From the train terminus and road, the observation deck at the foot of the statue is reached by 223 steps, or by elevators and escalators. I will give you tips about the city's geography, the neighborhoods and some landmarks and attractions you can see from the top. From the peak's platform the panoramic view includes downtown Rio, Sugarloaf Mountain, the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the Maracanã Stadium, and several of Rio's favelas. The cited beaches are included in today's itinerary. Cloud cover is not too common in Rio, yet the view from the platform can occasionally be obscured. Sunny days are recommended for optimal viewing.

The original statue design was done by a Brazilian, named Heitor da Silva Costa. He was also the engineer in charge of the construction. He shared the project with French sculptor Paul Landowski, who took almost two years working on the hands and face. It was built from 1926 to 1931, with funds raised from donations. Notable past visitors to the mountain peak include Pope Pius XII, Pope John Paul II, Alberto Santos-Dumont, German Sueiro Vasquez, Albert Einstein, and Diana, Princess of Wales. The Corcovado is also a symbol of the Brazilian culture.

Important information

It is highly advised that purchases for tickets for the Corcovado train to the Christ statue be made on-line in advance, so as to avoid huge line-ups. It may appear a hassle at first, but believe me, it's a pleasure to be able to avoid those huge high-season line-ups. The client must make the purchases on-line, because only he/she will be allowed to pick up the tickets on site. IMPORTANT: Keep the voucher and reservation code in a safe place, and be sure to bring the credit-card you used. Best to book the 09:00h train. On-site-purchases are EXTREMELY risky, specially in high-season, and hardly any guide/agent will take on such, nowadays. Look up: Corcovado. The year-round schedule is 8:30am to 6:30pm.
