Lisbon's St.George Castle Tramcar Tour

Conquer the castle in a comfortable and amusing way! Discover the old quarters that grew around the walls of the famous St.George Castle. The tram goes up and down from the downtown to the old narrow streets that climb up, as you go back in History by tram to the time of the cruzades. The tour goes around Alfama, the oldest quarter of Lisbon where some of the oldest monuments are too. Some of the sights include:

Gloria Funicular: The Gloria funicular opened to the public on October 24, 1885, and connects Restauradores Square to Bairro Alto (São Pedro de Alcântara Belvedere) through Calçada da Glória.

Bairro Alto: Unlike many of the civil parishes of Lisbon, this region is most often explained as a loose association of neighborhoods. Although it has no formal local political authority, the area carries social and historical significance to the community.

S. Pedro Alcântara View Point: Not only does Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantra (viewpoint) offer sublime views, it also provides a vantage point from which to understand the geography of Lisbon. Access it by taking Gloria’s funicular into the city’s Bohemian hub.

Castle of São GeorgeThe Castelo de S. Jorge: This national monument occupies a privileged area inside the old medieval alcáçova (citadel). It contains a castle, the ruins of the former royal palace, and part of an upscale neighborhood.

Monastery of São Vicente de Fora: See one of the city’s most prominent churches when you visit the 17th-century Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, which means "Monastery of St. Vincent Outside the Walls.

Lisbon Cathedral: The Roman Catholic Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Mary Major, or simply Lisbon Cathedral, is the city’s oldest church and the see of the Archdiocese of Lisbon. Since construction began in the year 1147, the building has been modified several times and survived many earthquakes.
